Transformative work requires transformative teams. A high-functioning team can help you achieve your desired outcomes by bringing the right people to the table, creating sustainable systems, clearly defining roles, and developing a realistic plan with shared ownership of the work. This is how you move from “hoping it happens” to “making it happen.”

Communities of Practice

One of my favorite formats for providing training and technical assistance is the Community of Practice (CoP). CoPs create space for teams of professionals to work toward a common goal, share knowledge, and build skills in a collaborative learning environment. This approach fosters growth, promotes cross-sector partnerships, and encourages problem-solving.

What does this look like?

  • teams meet regularly—either in person or virtually—across 4-6 sessions

  • both informal and structured activities, with small and large group discussions

  • in goal setting, innovative thinking, and problem-solving to reimagine systems supporting young people

  • between sessions, reflecting on progress and real-life challenges during meetings

What are the benefits?

  • for focus and direction

  • to facilitators and peers, maintaining momentum

  • and support from other members

  • in practices and outcomes

  • of strategies, insights, and resources that benefit the young people served

  • and reduced professional isolation
